Blackwell Stieglitz
A. Blackwell (Blackie) Stieglitz was born in Warrenton, Virginia. He attended Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia and later graduated from High School at Ransom School in Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida. He attended the University of Florida and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. He was a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force serving principally in the Far East and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. Mr. Stieglitz graduated from the University of Miami School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. He is married and has two grown sons.
Mr. Stieglitz began his legal career in the Miami office of the Statewide law firm of Fowler, White, Gillen, Humkey and Trenam, headquarted in Tampa, Florida. Cody Fowler was the first Florida lawyer elected president of the American Bar Association and remains a legend to many fortunate enough to have known and worked with him.
Mr. Stieglitz later pursued his career as a civil trial lawyer in Miami with the firms of Fine, Jacobson and Block and Blackwell, Walker and Gray in all of which he practiced in the areas of medical malpractice, medical device product liability, professional liability defense, insurance defense and general product and liability defense. Mr. Stieglitz is AV rated with Martindale Hubbell.
Mr. Stieglitz was chairman of the Medicine & Law Committee and a member of the Scope and Correlation Committee of the Tort and Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association. He was chairman of the Practice and Procedure Committee, Chairman of the Medical Malpractice Committee and served on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the Defense Research Institute (DRI). He served on the Board of Directors of the Dade County Defense Bar and later as president. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Florida Defense Lawyers Association. He served on the Board of Directors and was president of the Coconut Grove Rotary Club. Mr. Stieglitz has frequently served on the Vestry and as the Chancellor of the Vestry of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
Mr. Stieglitz is Senior Litigation Counsel at the firm and his practice centers on defending Medical Negligence, Professional Liability, Product (including medical device) Liability, Toxic Tort and environmental claims as well as general insurance defense. He has often spoken to claims personnel, physicians, lawyers and other professionals regarding liability exposures and trial strategies. He is admitted to practice in all Florida state courts and in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
